New York Fashion Week

New York Fashion Week is the single most important fashion event in the United States, as well as the biggest media event in the city. New York is one of the four major international fashion weeks, alongside fellow fashion capitals Milan, Paris and London. It showcases elite designers and top models, and is attended by the world’s media, buyers and VIPs.

New York Fashion Week lasts approximately one week and is held twice a year. The city typically begins the season, hosting fashion week during February and September. The other major fashion weeks begin soon after, starting with London, then Milan, and ending in Paris during March and October. The event allows designers to showcase the season’s designs months in advance and plays a big role in predicting upcoming trends. New York Fashion Week has become increasingly glamorous over the years, attracting the biggest celebrities and receiving press coverage from many different outlets, from Vogue to online blogs. Fashion week is also an important time for buyers deciding on what to stock for the next season.

New York Fashion Week was originally titled “Press Week” and was an event attended exclusively by fashion journalists. Organised by Eleanor Lambert, a fashion publicist, the first New York Fashion Week was held in 1943 during World War II as an alternative to travelling to shows in Paris. The event was purposefully held to take attention away from French designs, which monopolized the attention of most fashion magazines in the United States. The hard work quickly paid off as major fashion magazines, such as Vogue, began to feature more and more American designs. New York Fashion Week previously had no permanent location, often moving between hotels, until making the move to Bryant Park in 1994, where the event remained for the following 16 years.

More recently, New York Fashion Week (officially branded as Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week as of 2009) is held at the city’s Lincoln Center and is celebrating its 70th year. Today, New York Fashion Week showcases more than 80 designers and hosts over 100,000 industry guests. New York Fashion Week will next be held from the 5th – 12th of September 2013 and will feature designers’ Spring 2014 collections.
