Beverly Johnson, born in 1952 in Buffalo, New York, is best known for being the first African American model to grace the cover of Vogue magazine. However, this model is also famous for her acting and business endeavors, though her childhood talents and ambitions do not reflect the path her life would take.In her youth, Beverly Johnson was recognized as a talented swimmer and she aspired to be a successful lawyer. Her dreams led her to study criminal justice at Northeastern University and it was during this period of her life that Beverly decided to dabble in modeling. It was not long before she landed an assignment with Glamour, which was the beginning of a very successful modeling career. In 1974, Beverly Johnson became the first African-American woman to appear on the cover of Vogue magazine and this made great waves in the fashion industry. By the following year, the majority of the major fashion designers were using African-American models as the fashion ideal had changed.

Beverly Johnson used her success in modeling to become a success in many other areas of her life. She soon added writing and acting to her achievements. Beverly Johnson’s book is called Beverly Johnson’s Guide to a Life of Health and Beauty, and her television and film appearances included, amongst others, Ashanti, The Meteor Man and Law & Order. Furthermore, Beverly Johnson also had a brief singing career in 1979 when she released the album, Buddha Records.

Beverly Johnson was married to Billy Potter between 1971 and 1974. She later married Danny Sims with whom she had a daughter, Anansa, who followed in her mother’s footsteps in the fashion industry by becoming a plus-size model.

The latest venture for Beverly Johnson is her own website that sells a range of hair, body and skincare products. She considers this website to be her launching pad for The Beverly Johnson Lifestyle Brand. This venture has ensured that she can add successful businessperson to her list of accolades.
