Alternative footwear

The new year is upon us and many will be out hunting for hot new items of footwear including alternative footwear. From the shoes that you have always dreamed of owning to newly-designed pieces that are fresh on the market you will doubtless have trouble choosing exactly what it is you will be wearing this year. Of course, there is always the possibility that you will come across a pair of shoes so tempting that they will make that decision for you.

There are many people who are avid shoe shoppers but who have never come across the term “alternative footwear”. If you are one of these people then you may find yourself wondering exactly what alternative footwear is. Just how can a pair of shoes be alternative?

Put simply, alternative footwear is footwear which is tied firmly to a certain subculture – be it goth, punk, you name it, if a subculture has a fashion it will almost certainly have alternative footwear as well. The earliest examples of this phenomenon were shoes manufactured for the mainstream public but subsequently adopted by an alternative subculture – for example, punks became heavily associated with Dr. Martens.

Later on, as members of these subcultures moved on and established themselves in the fashion industry, they began consciously designing alternative footwear. A good example is Vivienne Westwood, a member of the seventies punk scene who went on to set up her own clothing line which deals in, amongst other things, distinctively punk-flavoured shoes.

The punk scene will not be to everyone’s taste, of course, but that is the great thing about alternative footwear – there is a style for everybody. Whether you want dark or demure, bright and bubbly, laid-back and dignified or loud and eye-catching, a quick look through the alternative footwear scene will bring you to a pair of shoes that is just perfect for your look.

So, the next time you are out buying shoes, why not take a step of the beaten track and go looking for alternative footwear? Who knows, you might end up with a whole new look.
